Ready for Eggs!

We worked on the nesting boxes last week. They were pretty easy to make and to install in the coop. We took out the old dog crate that the girls used to nest on and put up some tree branches for them. Glen decided that they should have a nice spot that they could all snuggle in at night since they like to sleep in a big chicken lump so he made a shelf out of an old dog travel crate wire door, framed it in wood and mounted it on the top branch. Of course they love it and sleep there every night. He also put a branch in front of one of the windows so they can look outside if they don't feel like or can't get outside for some reason. Yes the chicks are spoiled.

Thelma and Louise took the others for a little road trip the other day. I went to put them in and called them for about 10 minutes before they finally came running down from across the neighbors field. It was hot out and they had apparently gone into the hedge row for a nap and it took a while for them to wake up when I was calling.

Fun in the Run

Since the girls are not out free ranging all of the time, we have tried to make their coop and run a fun place to be. When I let them out of the coop in the morning, the first thing they do is run to the "breakfast bar" to eat. The love to get their food sprinkled on the log and just peck away at it all day. I also scatter some in the hay on the ground so they can scratch around and get exercise and entertainment at the same time. Poof Baby likes to see what you are up to so we're in the run with them, she often gets up on the perch to see what's up. We are going to build the nesting boxes this weekend. It should soon be time for some fresh eggs!
