Baby has her new name!

Baby has never been named since she was the chic for our grand baby on the way. I can happily say that the new grand baby to be is a girl and she is called Poof. How she came about that name is a very long story but Poof it is and so Poof is now Baby's new name. We call her Poof Baby.

All the girls are fine, continue to grow, but at a slower rate. They are all getting some red coloring on their faces, combs and little waddles. Their favorite time of day is free range time when they become serious hunters of bugs, spiders and worms. Of course they still chase each other around if someone gets an especially tasty leaf, they don't seem to be able to realize that there are more of the same leaves out there. (Tiny brains). Their favorite treats are still strawberries, grapes and cucumbers, zucchini is not so much of a favorite any more.

The time involved in taking care of chickens isn't really that much but anyone thinking about raising chickens should take into account the extra amount of time you will spend just watching them do what they do. Free entertainment and in fact they pay you by laying eggs.

The Black & White chick in these photos is Poof Baby. She is a Barred Rock.

Time Flies

We have been busy with the gardens and so no posts for a while. I am taking pictures along the way though and here are some. We have spent many evenings sitting out in the field being entertained by the chicks. Baby - she is still the smallest - jumps up on the arm of the chair for a tummy scratch. The rest just look at her like she is crazy but they hang around the chairs too. I notice they do clear out of the way when a pony comes by but they are unafraid of Harla our vegetarian cat. I've had to shoo away KitKat (the killer) but I'm not really sure she would take on a chicken. They are sort of big. They will follow us if we are walking around out there and if they are out and we go in for a while, when we come back they run to us like we've been missing! At this age (they are 12 weeks old) they spend most of their time eating and running after moths and other flying bugs. They are very easy to keep, their favorite treats so far are grapes, cucumber, strawberries and spinach. Glen is going to have to get busy building the nesting boxes so when they are ready to start laying eggs, they will have a proper nest.
